John Coltrane – Blue Train: The Complete Masters (1958) (2012) Remastered (2022) [24-96]

65th Anniversary Issue: On September 15, 1957, John Coltrane walked into Rudy Van Gelder’s living room studio in Hackensack, New Jersey and recorded his first major masterpiece: Blue Train. It was the fulfillment of a handshake deal Coltrane had struck with Alfred Lion, and it would be the legendary saxophonist’s only session as a leader for Blue Note Records. The album consisted of five tracks, fueled by the bluesy title track, which featured a dynamic sextet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Blue Train established Coltrane as a force of nature and set him on the path to becoming one of the most revered and influential jazz artists of all time.

“Few studio experiences I’ve had can compare to the thrill I got from listening to Blue Train’s original master tapes – stereo, stereo and alternate takes,” says Harley. “I consider these two new versions to be the definitive editions of this John Coltrane masterpiece.”

Blue Train came about at a pivotal point in Coltrane’s career. By early 1957, the saxophonist had hit rock bottom when he was fired from the Miles Davis Quintet for his heroin addiction. But after overcoming his addiction, Coltrane returned with a zeal inspired by an extended summer stint with Thelonious Monk at the Five Spot Café. At the end of the year, Coltrane was rehired by Davis and produced his first masterpiece, an album of which he was very proud. As Kahn reports in his essay, “Blue Train” was a recording much appreciated by Coltrane, who was always self-critical and humble. In 1960, when he was on tour with Miles Davis for the last time, a Swedish DJ asked Coltrane what he was out prefer his catalogue, and he immediately replied.
